A little background…

My name is Sam Graulty and I live in Jericho Vermont. I grew up with bikes in my life, but have never really felt like I’ve been obsessed. Sure I had a crummy “bmx” bike I’d take off of a DIY jump made of a piece of firewood and a scrap of plywood, then graduated to a Mongoose Stormer I’d ride into town to play bike tag but never got too much more adventurous than that. I began mountain biking in college, have done some light local touring but the purchase of a gravel-specific bike from Bootlegger Bikes changed all that. The Salsa Journey(person) is truly a do-all Vermont Adventure bike. I finally had a bike that could live up to the routes I tend to spend my winters making (when the skiing is crummy of course).
In the fall of 2019, I also was lucky enough to see a screening of the film One Town at a Time at the Grange Hall in Charlotte. In it, Mike Leonard (who I’d actually met at a wedding earlier in the year!) re-traces his steps of becoming a member of the 251 Club looking back at how he and the state of Vermont have changed in the years since he first joined the club.
For the uninitiated, the 251 Club is, “an organization of Vermont enthusiasts whose objective is to visit the state’s 251 towns and cities.” Folks do it in their own way and at their own pace. It’s all on the honor system and consequently, very informal. But it’s a great way to see the sate and though I’d heard of the Club before seeing Mike’s film, it really lit a spark. Combine that with the new bike, throw in a dash of global pandemic and a pinch of nerdy obsession, and I was hooked and a plan was born.

“Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.”
